This guide is designed to help you quickly and cheaply level your leatherworking. There are points in the leatherworking profession that can be quite frustrating to those who don’t know it in and out – this guide will help you prepare for these dry spells with the leather you need ahead of time. I do my best to avoid rare recipes (those found as drops or from out the way trainers) and recipes which require rare or expensive materials. We will occasionally use these recipes due to other constraints, but information on where to find the components will be included.
If you have acquired some extra materials and it would be cheaper for you to create items other than those listed, by all means do so. In addition, feel free to sub out the listed items for some you are making to wear, but remember to get extra leather if this makes you come up short. Any items that are especially important will be noted in the guide (such as those for specialization turn-ins).
For an excellent guide on leveling your skinning BC to Wrath, see the Skinning 300-450 guide.
Note: The numbers provided here are estimates only. You may need a little more leather than what is listed, or a little less. If you end up with extra leather, remember that in most cases you can change that leather into the next type (medium to heavy for example) to save you some cash or farming time later on.

Why Level Leatherworking?
Leatherworking provides some great advantages for leather and mail wearing classes. It is great for leveling up your character since you can very cheaply make item enhancements (armor kits), and can also craft upgrades in gear if you haven’t found them as you level. There are some item enhancements which you can only place on your own gear. There is also something to be said for being able to make your own armor kits rather than having to find someone to do it for you.

Choose a specialization
Now is the best time to chose your specialization, since you can make the items you need to specialize as you level up your skill.
- Dragonscale Leatherworking: Mail armor mostly used by Shaman and Hunters. Here is a list of Dragonscale craftables.
- Elemental Leatherworking:Leather armor which increases resistance, mainly used by rogues and feral druids. Here is a list of Elemental craftables.
- Tribal Leatherworking:Leather armor which increases intelligence and stamina, good for druids and sometimes rogues (it also gives crit and dodge). Here is a list of Tribal craftables.
You won’t be able to actually learn your speciallization until you make the required items in the next section (though Elemental leatherworkers can right away if they like, since they don’t need to make anything).

This section is divided into subsections for each specialization. Items that will be used for your specialization are marked in red.

Leveling from 430 to 450 is much more difficult and costly. At this point it is probably best to craft specific items to sell, for friends, or for yourself, instead of purely to level up. You can level this with just recipes learned from your trainer, but you may want to purchase the epic recipes which cost Arctic Furs, for the purposes of making gear for yourself or others.
In addition, all recipes past this level require rare materials such as frozen orbs.
If you still simply want to level as cheaply as possible without farming rare materials, here is a suggestion:
- Advertise in Trade Chat with the recipes you can do, and make things free with other’s mats. This will allow you to level up while costing you nothing, and if you have some of the blue items available at this leatherworking level, you should be able to find some people who want what you can make.
I hope you found this guide informative. In the future, more details on useful recipes may be added, or tips on making money with leatherworking.
I am also looking for feedback! Let me know if this guide worked well for you, or leave a comment with any suggestions for improvements or corrections.
Thank you for reading!
Nice!Nice!
Wow, really? That’s awesome!Wow, really? That’s awesome! Thanks for letting me know eric. Now I need to update this more often!
Yay, I’m on there too!Yay, I’m on there too!
I found a link to the guideI found a link to the guide on the official World of Warcraft website, and I think that’s the first WoW-Pro guide I’ve seen there. Just so you’re aware of it, and I think it’s well done.

Congratulations!
Hmmm, I really need to dustHmmm, I really need to dust this guide off and revise that and a few other issues with it that have cropped up due to materials changing.
For now, just make whatever is cheapest for those five levels. The armors are nice since they can be sold fairly easily, compared to gear. But the scales might be harder to get, so that’s up to you.
405-410 Create 5 Jormungar405-410 Create 5 Jormungar Leg Armor
The materials have changed so that one leg armor now requires 3 Heavy Borean Leather and 12 Jormungar Scales. So that would be…
15 Heavy Borean Leather
60 Jormungar Scales
Would you still recommend making 5 of those? I can’t find a guide that would have all the latest reagent requirements 🙁
Wicked Leather BracersYou have Wicked Leather Bracers from 280-290 in all 3 specializations. However, this is learned at 265, and is green at 285, so it would be much better to make 20 of them from 265-285 (or at least 25 from 265-280) especially since it’s trained, and the gauntlets are a pattern you have to go buy.
In expert, you forgot toIn expert, you forgot to list the heavy leather for the harnesses.
Thanks, I’ll fix it soonThanks, I’ll fix it soon 🙂
Heavy knothide for 335-350 LW recipes nowThe recipes for Thick Draenic Vest and Scaled Draenic boots require 3 heavy knothide leather (vs 14 regular knothide as before) for the vest and 2 heavy knothide leather (vs 12 regular knithides) for the boots. It probably works out to about the same about of leather in the long run, just has the extra step of either upgrading teh regular leather or buying the heavy knothide instead.
Okay, I finally fixed this,Okay, I finally fixed this, in a sort of cheater way – I just removed the 430-440 section. If the materials are that costly, it’s really up to you what you chose to make, and preferably it should be stuff that actually gets put to use. Either of those armor kits should sell decently, since they are useful to raiders, but I’d rather the reader just chose what to make at that point.
Not against the rules atNot against the rules at all, thanks very much for the nice comment! 🙂
just a thank you…. I’m sort of new to all this stuff, but thank you so very much for making this level for leatherworking… I have asked different people where to find something like this and they keep sending me to places that, well for me, just confuses me more, lol… not hard to do. I really hope this comment isn’t against any of the rules but if so, do what you have to, to me, lol… so thanks again, Pastog.
It’s good to hear that thisIt’s good to hear that this was helpful!
I haven’t updated this guide in a while, so thanks for the info. I’ll get to it in a bit, I have a few other changes to make here as well, but I’m concentrating on my druid guide at the moment.
