Introduction
Engineering is a primary crafting profession that can create as many useful items including end level epic helms, guns, bullets, arrows and scopes. Looking at that list it’s no wonder that many hunters will find engineering useful but other classes will also find interesting items as an Engineer. The ability to harvest “clouds” for motes and crystallized elements, the Mechano-hog and Mekgineer’s Chopper for example.
List of Materials
Hopefully you’ve taken mining as a second profession or you have access to a miner otherwise Engineering will be an expensive profession to take all the way to 450. I’ve worked some leeway into the guide, often by making extra when the recipe has turn yellow just incase you don’t get a skill point. This means that there maybe some left over materials by the end.
There are occasions when you might need to buy extra. The Gnomish Knife at the end is a prime example of this. I’ve also not included the materials need to make the epic engineering helm as it is dependant on which you want to make for yourself.

51-75 | 24 x Copper Tube | 48 Copper bar 24 Weak Flux |
Sell |
75-90 | 20 x Course Blasting Powder | 20 Coarse Stone | This goes yellow at 85 so keep going until you get to 90. You shouldn’t need more than the 20 which you will use later so keep them |
90-100 | 15 x Copper Modulator | 30 Handful Copper Bolts 15 Copper Bar 30 Linen Cloth |
Only do enough to get to 100 as you don’t need these for anything else or keep them as extra points |
100-110 | 15 x Silver Contacts | 15 Silver Bar | Keep these for later. Again you might get more points as it goes yellow at 110 |
110-120 | 10 x Bronze Tubes | 20 Bronze Bar 10 Weak Flux |
If you have got any extra points from before this you could only do enough to get to 120 |
120-125 | 5 x Large Copper Bombs | 15 Copper bars 20 Coarse Blasting Powder 5 silver contacts |
Visit the trainer time after this |
125-150 | 40 x Heavy Blasting Powder 20 x Whirring Bronze Gizmo |
40 Heavy Stone 40 Bronze Bar 20 Wool Cloth |
Both recipes go green around 145 but as you will need 40 powders and 20 gizmos for later so you should be able to get to 150 |
150-155 | 20 x Bronze Framework | 40 Bronze Bar 20 Medium Leather 20 Wool Cloth |
Again you will need 20 frameworks later so you might get further than 155 |
155-175 | 20 x Explosive Sheep | 40 Heavy Blasting Powder 20 Whirring Bronze Gizmo 20 Bronze Framework 40 Wool Cloth |
|
175-176 | 1 X Gyromatic Micro-Adjustor | 4 Steel Bars | Another tool for you to keep |
176-195 | 90 x Solid Blasting Powder | 180 Solid Stone | With such large amount needed later you should get to the point where this recipe is greyed out. Keep going till you’ve got the 90 powders you need for later |
195-205 | 15 x Mithril Tubes | 45 Mithril Bar | This recipe is yellow do enough to get you to 205 Also time to visit the trainer after this |
205-210 | 10 x Unstable Triggers | 10 Mithril Bar 10 Mageweave Cloth 10 Solid Blasting Powder |
Again you might get more points that needed but you will need 10 triggers later |
210-225 | 30 x Hi-Impact Mithril Slugs | 30 Mithril Bar 30 Solid Blasting Powder |
Stop making the slugs when you get to 225 unless you want some points extra. |
225-235 | 20 x Mithril Casings – | 60 Mithril Bar | Again you might get more points that needed but you will need 20 castings later |
235-245 | 10 x Hi-Explosive Bomb | 20 Mithril Casings 10 Unstable Trigger 20 Solid Blasting Powder |
|
245-250 | 10 x Mithril Gyro-Shot | 20 Mithril Bar 20 Solid Blasting Powder |
No need to make more if you get to 250. |
250-260 | 50 x Dense Blasting Powder | 100 Dense Stone | You need at least 20 but it goes green at 255 so make as many as needed to get to 260 |
260-280 | 20 x Thorium Widget | 60 Thorium Bar 20 Runecloth |
|
280-285 | 5 x Thorium Tube | 30 Thorium Bar | |
285-300 | 20 x Thorium Shells | 40 Thorium Bar 20 Dense Blasting Powder |
Goes yellow at 295 so only make as many as you need to get to 300 Time to go to Outlands and find a trainer |
300-310 | 50 x Handful of Fel Iron Bolts | 50 Fel Iron Bar | Lots needed so keep going till grey |
310-320 | 10 x Fel Iron Casing 15 x 4 Elemental Blasting Powder |
30 Fel Iron Bar 30 Mote of Earth 15 Mote of Fire |
You need at least 5 casings and 25 powders but probably more due to Fel iron Bomb already being yellow at 320. So make at least 10 casings and 10 powders. If you haven’t managed to get to 320 you might want to risk moving on to the Fel iron bombs as there is a chance to make some points up. |
320-325 | 10 x Fel Iron Bomb | 10 Fel Iron Casing 20 Handful of Fel Iron Bolts 10 Elemental Blasting Powder |
This is already yellow but you would be very unlucky not to get 5 points from 10 attempts. |
325-340 | 20 x 3 Adamantite Grenade | 80 Adamantite Bar 20 Elemental Blasting Powder 40 Handful of Fel Iron Bolts |
Only make enough to get to 340 as it goes yellow at 335 |
340-350 | 10 x Felsteel Stabilizer | 20 Felsteel Bar | Time to find a trainer in Northrend |
350-370 | 35 x 1-3 Handful of Cobalt Bolts | 70 Cobalt Bar | You’ll need around 50 bolts for later so keeping going until you get enough |
370-375 | 18 x 2 Volatile Blasting Trigger | 54 Cobalt Bar 18 Crystallized Water |
You’ll need a minimum of 25 triggers for later but we’ll make 36 (18×2) as some of the recipes will go yellow and extras may be needed |
375-380 | 10 x Overcharged Capacitor | 40 Cobalt Bar 10 Crystallized Earth |
You’ll need 10 capacitors later so keep going passed 380 |
380-385 | 10 x Hammer Pick | 50 Cobalt Bar | Only make enough to get to 385. If you’re a miner keep 1 to replace your pick and hammer. |
385-390 | 8 x Explosive Decoy | 8 Frostweave Cloth 24 Volatile Blasting Trigger |
This is one of the yellow recipes that uses the triggers, so only make enough to get to 390 |
390-400 | 15 x Froststeel Tube | 120 Cobalt Bar 15 Crystallized Water |
You might not need all 15 so you can stop once you get to 400 and then come back to make more if needed for later recipes |
400-405 | 5 x Diamond-cut Refractor Scope | 5 Froststeel Tube 10 Handful of Cobalt Bolts |
|
405-415 | 15 x 2-4Saronite Bomb | 65 Saronite Bar 15 Volatile Blasting Trigger |
Another of the yellow recipes that uses the triggers, so just make enough to get to 415 |
415-420 | 5 x 5 Mana Injector Kit | 60 Saronite Bar 10 Crystallized Water |
|
420-430 | 15 x Mechanized Snow Goggles | 120 Saronite Bar 30 Borean Leather 15 Eternal Shadow |
Goes yellow at 425 so you might not need all 15 to get to 430 |
430-435 | 5 x Noise Machine | 10 Froststeel Tube 10 Overcharged Capacitor 40 Handful of Cobalt Bolts |
|
435-445 | 15 x Gnomish Army Knife | 150 Saronite Bar 15 Skinning Knife 15 Minning Pick 15 Blacksmithing Hammer |
Stop when you get to 445 to make the your engineering helm (assuming you want it) |
445-446 | 1 x Engineering helm example | Materials are dependant on what helm you want | I’m assuming that since you’ve gotten this far you will want the engineering helm |
446-450 | 15 x Gnomish Army Knife | 150 Saronite Bar 15 Skinning Knife 15 Minning Pick 15 Blacksmithing Hammer |
To get to the last couple of points is very expensive as the only really viable recipe to use is the Gnomish Army Knife which unfortunately goes green at 445. So just keep grinding them out till you get there. I would say at least 15-20 might be necessary.. unless you are very unlucky. |
This really is the end.. honest
I hope you found this guide useful. If you see any way I can make it better please feel free to comment and I’ll make changes
I would love to see this updatedI am leveling my first engineer in over 5 years (from scratch anyway). I would love to see this updated as it is more difficult to go from 1-600 than from 300-375, 375-450 etc. Especially since I am having to go get most of the materials by farming for them. Anyway, good guide and I appreciate the time you have put into it.
SeparationI think that this is a good guide but I think that it might be a little bit easier to follow if you divided the mats into groups of 0-150, 150-225 and so on. This is just a suggestion as a know engineering is a really big twink profession.
Grats 🙂 This guide is helping me so much, I am not a rich player and i do not have an 80, but i am useing your guide on my undead Rouge witch is around 26, And i am already at 150. Very nice guide. 🙂
White smoke flares workWhite smoke flares work really well for 335-350
It is very cheap 1x Elemental Blasting Powder 1x Netherweave Cloth
Costs 6g from Wind Trader Lathrai in Shattrath, but you can also buy from other vendors
This for me was much cheaper than 3 Adamantite Grenade and Felsteel Stabilizer
280-285 5 x Thorium TubeThis recipe requires 6 thorium instead of you 5 thorium per tube. just thought i’d point that one out, but so far so good. really good guide, thanks. 🙂
Silver ContactsThis guide has been very useful to my DK. However, it’s worth pointing out that at level 100-110, each Silver Bar actually produces FIVE Silver Contacts, for a potential total of 75 if you are not paying attention (“Create All” –> afk –> fail!). Only 5 are actually needed later to make the Large Copper Bombs. If you don’t need the points, the Silver Bars sell far better than the Silver Contacts do.
thanksI am currently taking my DK up for some mining. Might couple this with engi. 🙂
ggi agree with gg it should be called engineering for dummies! 😛 🙂 🙂
ggperfect guide. easy to read and understand for anyone.
should be titled: engineering for dummies.
AwesomeThis is an awesome guide. Works like a charm for my Death Knight 🙂
Thanks for making this guide 😀
You can buy a [Gnomish ArmyYou can buy a [Gnomish Army Knife] at the AH really cheap now, this allows you to skip any of the parts requiring you to make an engineering tool… save you some money. The steel bars for example. I skipped all the parts about making a took and was still about 10-15 skill points ahead of the guide.
[Gnomish Army Knife] includes all the engineering tools, blacksmith hammer, mining pick etc… on my server it sells for between 1G50s and 3G.
AwesomeAwesome 😉
All doneAll done 🙂

From 335 to 350 you mightFrom 335 to 350 you might want to make Smoke Flares – http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=30341
Schematic is easy to get and only requires 1x Netherweave Cloth and 1x Elemental Blasting Powder.
Overcharged Capacitor linksOvercharged Capacitor links to Explosive Decoy (instead of itself).
I’m leveling Engineering on two characters, so this guide is most appreciated 😉
If you’ve done it there youIf you’ve done it there you can quick and easy replace the “Items Needed” with wowhead links, if you use an editor that has a search/replace function. But maybe this will look a bit too crowded with links… your decision 🙂
Really nice Guide btw! 🙂

Looks really great, goodLooks really great, good job!
Suggestion:
For the shopping list, use wowhead tooltips. I know it’s a lot of work, but it just makes the guide all the more awesome 🙂
Found the problem with the missing Copper BoltsI somehow missed the 31-50 row when I was inputting the table. Sorry about that. Updated it and the amount of materials need to take into account the extra 30 copper cars you need.
Thanks for the feedback. IThanks for the feedback. I must have missed making the Copper Bolts. I’ll revisit it and see if I can work it in. Shouldn’t be too hard.. I hope…
Pretty GoodEngineering is a pain to level efficiently because so many things require you to make other things first. I see that you take that into account most of the time, but sometimes you don’t. For example you call for the use of Handful of Copper Bolts but you never have us make them at low level, instead we make dynamite which is useless for making other things.
Leveling engineering is quite complicated for this reason. I have no doubt this guide will get me from point A to point B, but it may not be the best way to get there. Still, I see you put a lot of effort in and it’s formatted nicely, and for the most part does take this into account. Thank you for making it 🙂
Thank youI just decided to make my Death Knight an engineer, and I’ve been hoping someone would write an engineering guide as I did not know what would give me the most skill for the least money.
I’ll give this a shot to see how it works. Thanks for your time ^_^
Very neatly done I willVery neatly done 🙂 I will definitely give this a spin once I got my levelling sorted out.
I will try to come back with actually useful comments as soon as possible 😉
