This is a guide which will tell which talents are the best to choose while leveling, also what rotation you should do, what kind of stats you should be focusing on and some tips. This is based on my opinion, that’s why it’s an Enhancement leveling guide in the first place :). I have included alot of feedback, too, and I will change this guide when the class will change too.

2. What’s the best leveling spec?
The best (solo) leveling spec for the shaman is Enhancement. This is because it’s the most mana efficient tree there is, while it still maintains a lot of damage, in fact the shaman deals the most damage with minimum mana useage (with duel wield, that is). This only counts after level 40, though, and before that you might try Elemental. Elemental is our Casting spec, with it, we boost our Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, Shocks and Totems.
I could write an Elemental leveling guide, but thats not needed. Browsing at the Wowhead forums brought me a guide for elemental leveling. Read CanadianSnipers’ Elemental Leveling Guide if you choose to level as Elemental. That guide can take you to level 80.
If you want to level as Enhancement all the way, then read further. Otherwise, you could pick up the guide from level 40 and get some gear from the Auction House.

Click here for the build. This spec is made for solo gameplay, keep that in mind when your asked for an instance, group, or whatever.
Always take weapons with the highest min/max. damage range. These are usually slow weapons.
1 – 9.
- Until you gain Earth Shock, simply spam Lightning Bolt.
- When you get Earth Shock, use it when your target is in melee range, and use Lightning Bolt until a mob is near you.
- Keep up Lightning Shield always.
- Enchant your weapon with Rockbiter.
- Use the best DPS weapon, be it a 1h + shield or 2H (the slow weapon part does not apply here, because we don’t have Windfury yet)Rotation: Auto attack + Earth Shock. Pull with Lightning Bolt. Always keep up Lightning Shield.
10 – 19.
- Same as above but:
- Use Flametongue instead of Rockbiter.
- You might want to use a fast weapon, so that Flametongue hits more (which does more damage than it would on a slow weapon).Rotation: Lightning Bolt, until the mob is near you, then spam Earth Shock while auto attacking. Again, always keep up Lightning Shield.
20 – 29.
From now on, we will be using a method I call ‘Shield Twisting’. All you do is keeping a balance between Lightning Shield and Water Shield. Water Shield gives mana, but more then we need. Lightning Shield gives free damage, so keep a nice balance between those two ability’s.
Rotation: Lightning Bolt, until the mob is near you, then spam Earth Shock while auto attacking.
30 – 39.
- Use the Windfury weapon enchant.
- Always take a 2H weapon with a speed of 3.0 or more.
- Don´t forget the Shield Twisting method.Rotation: Pull with Lightning Bolt, then Auto attack + Earth Shock.
40 – 49.
Okay, so you´ve made it to level 40. Ready to rock? Because now we get our key ability’s. Between these levels we get Dual Wield, Stormstrike and Lava Lash. The fun can now start!
- Start dual wielding at level 44, otherwise you will miss too much without the +hit talents. Also put Windfury on both weapons.Rotation: Stormstrike > Earth Shock > Lava Lash > Shield Twist.
Note: Although I call this a rotation; you’ll notice that, after a while, you’ll simply be using the first ability that pops up from the cooldown. That’s why you’ll see “priority list” instead of “rotation” next time.
50 – 75.
As explained up here, you’ll now rather have a priority list rather than a rotation.
- Use Shamanistic Rage when you’re out of mana.
- Again, don’t forget the Shield Twisting method.Priority list: Stormstrike > Earth Shock > Lava Lash.
Whenever you have 4/5 or 5/5 Mealstrom Weapon, use Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning, (use Chain Lightning only on AoE). Try to have the Stormstrike debuff on the target before pulling this one out. Do this when their is a gap between the cooldowns.
75 – 80.
- Use Windfury weapon enchant on main hand and Flametongue on your off-hand. Still take a slow off-hand (Because of Stormstrike, Lava Lash and Windfury will still be used.
- Use Shamanistic Rage at 40% mana, or at least close to. And always use it when you’re about to start a fight, since it ‘procs‘ from attacks, you’ll want to make the most of it every time you use it.
- Again, don’t forget the Shield Twisting method.Priority list: Stormstrike > Earthshock > Lava Lash.
Again, do a 5/5 Mealstrom Weapon when their is a gap between your cooldowns.
Instances.
- Use Earthliving if you are going to heal for an instance.
- Whenever you are at a boss fight, drop: Strenght of Earth, Flametongue totem, Windfury Totem and Healing/Mana stream totem.Solo.
- Just heal yourself with Lesser Healing Wave whenever you need to heal. Once you get Maelstrom Weapon, use that to do instant/short Healing Wave‘es
- If you’re multipulling, use your Stoneclaw Totem to crowd control.
- You can also pop your Spirit Wolves to help with the crowd, since they can heal you.Professions.
- The best options are Skinning/Mining, because they make lots of money. Skinning gives critical strike rating and mining gives extra stamina, which scales with buffs like Blessing of Kings. These bonuses are small and not needed at all, and you can pick up any proffesion.
In the following order: Stamina > Agility >Intellect > ManaPer5Sec > Strength.
1 – Stamina:
-
- Needed for health.
2 – Agility Needed for Attack Power and Critical strike chance. Also gives armor and dodge, but that’s not why we’re using it.
3 – Intellect: Needed for mana, also gives spell critical strike chance. Needed for everything, and gives attack power because of the talent Mental Dexterity.
4 – Mana Per 5 Seconds: You won’t see this alot until outland, but Water Shield gives this, too. It basicly gives you a certain amount of mana every five seconds. But since patch 3.0 we see mana flowing in very smooth, but the term “MP/5” is still used.
5 – Strength: Needed for Attack Power. Since Shamans gained attack power from Agility, and Intellect, this stat has lost his power. Let’s just say that this stat is not bad to take. But don’t go for it.
Here I will show some gear you can pick up while leveling, although this guide is aimed at solo gameplay, going to an instance or two isn’t a bad idea.

Hey, First of all, niceHey,
First of all, nice guide. Second I just have a question….
Why not use Frost Shock at all? I just started playing Shamans so bear with me if this is a stupid question… But I couldn’t help noticing that on my level 22 toon, Frost Shock does around 100 damage whereas Earth Shock does around 70. Is this something to do with talents or whatever, or am I just a noob?
Thanks in advance,
Shinke.
Because it’s christmas, IBecause it’s christmas, I will change it 😛 (Otherwise I would anyway, but meh).
One thing,One thing, though. You could add tooltips to the abilities/talents.

ThisThis is a great guide! I wish we had more like these, unfortunately.
Comment me on my blog. http://kostada.blogspot.com/
In the table of contents,In the table of contents, you could use the “click to go” method, as shown in [url=https://www.wow-pro.com/general_guides/creating_table_contents_your_guide#bbcode]Jiyambi’s Table of Contents[/url] guide.
In 5. Tips, under instances, “Strenght of Earth” should be “Strength of Earth”, “keep up watershield. Always.” should be “Water Shield”, and under professions, “there just a good choice.”, there should be “they’re”
Under 7. Gear, “this is because your windfury, stormstrike, and lava lash wil”, it should be “Windfury, Stormstrike, and Lava Lash will”
[ / end nitpicking ]
I’ll keep checking, just to make sure there’s no more, though. 😛
Edit: I can’t believe I forgot to rant about how much Troll shamans own in a comment. >,<
Edit 2: Under the 1-9 and 10-19 part for rotations and such, you spelled rockbiter as rockbitter.
Level 1 – 30 changes.Hello,
I’m going to change parts from level 1 ’till 30. They’re fine at the moment but since the new changes there are a few things I have to change.
~Trollvink.
I’ll look into it.Hi and thank you for your comment, I will look into this and, most likely, change some of my guide. I’m kinda busy with school at the moment so it should take some time before I got it all changed.
Problem was my shaman was around lvl 30 when I started this guide, so I had to improvise the 1 – 30 part.
~Trollvink
Guide commentsI must say I disagree with several points in your guide, but please take these comments in a constructive way. I leveled a Shaman prior to patch 3.0 and eventually deleted it (horrible pvp as enhancement). With the awesome changes now (leveling made a lot easier with Water Shield at level 20 and Trolls getting dreadlocks) I am again leveling a shaman.
First of all I disagree with Enhancement being the best spec for leveling, at least until level 30 (like was said by someone before me), when you get Windfury weapon. The reason behind this is that most of your damage comes from spells and your lower tier talents scale with Intellect more than physical stats. That said, I think the way to go at lower levels is equiping towards spelpower and intelect and grabbing Enhancement Talents (Ancestral Knowledge, Thundering Strikes and Improved Ghost Wolf). Remember that Flametongue Weapon, Lightning Shield and Searing Totem scale with spellpower.
Also, in the beggining (lvls 1-10), it’s much wiser to Lightning Bolt pull the mob. This allows you to hit the target twice, perhaps three times with no damage. Earth Shock should not, in any circunstances, be used as a regular damaging too. It has a higher mana cost, scales very poorly with spellpower, lower range and the killer 6 second cooldown. If one follows one suggestion of using it every time it’s up, in the earlier levels that will mean sitting after nearly every pull. The mana regen in the game follows a 5 second rule, meaning that 5 seconds after casting a spell, mana regeneration is stopped. Casting ES everytime will block your mana regen entirely, greatly increasing downtime. It’s a lot better to cast 2-3 LB and just spank the mob to death, alowing your mana to regen while you melee the mob.
Flametongue, despite what the tooltip says, has been proved to do more damage with fast weapons. Granted the longer swing will result in a bigger FT hit, but the constant, fast FT hits (which, remember, scale very well with spellpower) will do more dps in the end.
Your best shock dps rotation is Flame Shock and then Earth Shock. This allows for the full lenght of the first shock. After Stormstrike, just Earth Shocking will do more dps. However, in instances (depend who you are grouped with) and specially Raids, Enhancement Shamans should not Earth Shock as the SS charges are better used by other classes (this was prior to patch 3.0, with the Improved SS talent, I don’t know if the number of SS charges is actually a problem).
Finally, regarding totems, I know it sucks to drop them everytime, but, as Blizzard has stated, they are a major part of a Shaman’s gameplay. Specially at higher levels, with the improved totems talent, Strenght of the Earth will make a huge difference in DPS and thus should be up all the time. You should always try to put totems where you can pull multiple mobs (LB rank 1 if needed) and fully use it’s benefits. At lower levels, dropping Searing Totem every time is a must.
I believe that’s all I had to say, congrats on the effort put in the guide.
Hmpf >Hmpf ><
TypoThere is a small typo in section 8. Totem Quests, for the Call of Air quests for horde you say,”If you by accident accept the quest that will teleport you on a mountain, don’t be afraid and jump of the wooden plank, you will be teleported back to the quest giver!”, it should be Jump OFF the wooden plank.
Not being annoying or anything just trying to help your great guide.

The guide is now finished,The guide is now finished, i’ll change stuff ASAP with new patches ‘n stuff.
Hehe, thanks for yourHehe, thanks for your feedback, English isn’t my main language, so a few mistakes can happen 😉
I’ve just read this again[size=10]I’ve finally come to a decision on what to do with my shaman, for one, and for two, I found some errors.
[hr]
In 5. Tips, under instances, you spelled Earthliving incorrectly, as “Eearhtliving”, in the same area, you spelled strength as strenght, and you did it again in 6. Stats during the first time you mentioned it; in the first paragraph. In solo, under tips, second row down, you made a typo and said aswel instead of as well. That’s all I’ve found as of now, though.
[/size]
[hr]
[size=10]Well, on to the topic of my shaman. I’m fond of it, though, I’m also fond of my warrior. I’ve come to the conclusion that I will level my shaman up to 80 after my warrior, and try to help your guide as much as possible along the way, in return for using it. This includes pointing out typos ;)[/size]
It’s look very good now,It’s look very good now, perfect example of what teamwork can do.
I took the liberty to make the levels bold characters in your talent spec section, and also corrected a couple of bbcoding errors. Feel free to revert it though if you don’t like it.
Comment.Hello,
They have the same range, the initial damage of flame shock is lower then earth shock, but if you count flame shock’s DoT, it deals more damage. The problem is that Flame Shock’s DoT can’t run it’s full duration. Outside of that, I like to save it for an interruption.
Thanks for using my guide! 🙂
~Trollvink
Awsome Guide but had a questionI have recently started a troll shaman thanks to your great guide but there is still a question that has been bothering me. Wouldn’t it be better to start out a fight with Flame Shock 😕 ? You could use it as a ranged pull and the Dot applied should last the full fight. I was looking at the last ranks of Earth Shock and Flame Shock and noted, Earth Shock: 18% of base mana and deals 849 – 895 nature damage. Flame Shock: 17% base mana and deal 500 fire damage and then 556 fire damage over 12 seconds. I of course am not suggesting to use this after a Stormstrike due to the increase in nature damage. I am just saying if we could use it to pull our target to us?
Thanks for the great guide and I hope you make some more. 🙂
-Nester
No problem. No problem, and thanks 😀
Excellent GuideI was ready to dump my Elemental Shaman (I play Solo), due to the low damage, the constant need to replenish mana, the difficulty to fight multiple mobs, etc. Since I’ve changed spec now I do not have any of these problems. One thing is that Feral spirit is better than elemental, and with full Maelstrom, Healing Wave becomes an instant spell, no interruptions.
Thanks again
Thanks.Thanks! and I’ll change that 😛
True.Yep, indeed. I have changed it. Its just that the shamans main stat was Strenght, and now it seems alot less attractive.
Sorry to nitpick, but youSorry to nitpick, but you spelled “Professions” wrong in 5. Tips section, as proffesions. Thanks for the great guide, I’ve found it useful for my shaman so far.
Stat weightingPretty nice guide, but I have an issue with it. You say that strenght is better than intellect, however with Ancestral knowledge and Mental Dexterity each point of int will give 1.1 AP, plus mana and spell crit, while strength will give 1.0 AP pr point and nothing else. So, int is now flat out better than strength for ench shamen.
Hmm, ok I’ll look into it. 1Hmm, ok I’ll look into it. 1 agi is not 1 int, it is 1 int = 1 AP.
I indeed notice I have to change a few things, now I am leveling a second shaman.
Lava Burst and othersFor adding Lava Burst into the rotation at 75, the last I remember was that Maelstrom was nerfed so that it didn’t effect Lava Burst. As for stat importance, I’d put intellect behind agility (1 agi = 1 int, with talents, = 1 str with regards to AP) and move stamina down a few levels, mainly because while leveling, especially pre-70, enh shamans are killing most things fast enough that you dont need a massive amount of health. Also, now that lightning shield costs no mana, I’d definately keep that up while leveling after you get shamanistic rage, more damage = faster killing, and just rage most/all of your mana back when needed. And as a last point, I always used strength of earth totem, helped kill a little faster and after 28 you can just recall it back and get a little mana return from it, but it’s dependant on your playstyle and totems definately aren’t needed to level with.
Otherwise, great guide to get people new to enh shamans going, wish I had a clue when I first started 😉
I’ll seeOk, I’ll see, looks to me I got alot to do to make this guide perfect 😛
*Writes on ToDo list*
EDIT: I’ve added the quests
About the links of wowhead,About the links of wowhead, I’m currently in school (just in the break atm :P) and I will change it A.S.A.P, it really looks messy now :/
K, I’ll change it.K, I’ll change it.
A formatting tip: instead ofA formatting tip: instead of listing the item name and then the link, you can make the name the link using this code:
[ url=YOURLINKHERE ]ITEM NAME HERE[ /url ]
This would make the gear list look a little cleaner.
Still, this is an awesome guide 🙂 thanks for making it!
I would also list agi overI would also list agi over str for ENH shammies. For the reasons you mentioned but also for 2 very important talents which rely on crits:
[url=http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=16284]Flurry[/url]
[url=http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=30811]Unleashed Rage[/url]
One note: considering thatOne note: considering that strength ONLY gives attack power while agility gives crit, dodge, and armor, you can’t really say they are equal. I would definitely list agility > strength if I were you.
My shaman is currentlyMy shaman is currently languishing at level 20 because I have no idea how to play her. Hopefully I can use this guide to revive her 🙂 Thanks!
GreatWell, thats good, it’ll only get better! 😛
Thanks very much.
I’mThanks very much.
I’m actually at level 12 and I have various totems, but I see that using a totem at every fight it just drains your mana out. Maybe you can use totems in multi-pulls with 4-5 mobs. I use earthbind totem to run away from the mobs when I’m low on health but I rarely have low health :P.
Initial impression on the Shaman class is that they are great ^^
Yeah they have changed thisYeah they have changed this in a patch sometime ago, I will put strenght in my list of needed stats, but at this moment, I wouldnt know where 🙁
Comment. What CNyfalt said is right, totems should’nt be used for solo gameplay, they take to much mana for there benefits. In my opinion, use totems at hard-to-beat mobs and bosses in instance’s.
I will put this in the ‘Tips’
Thanks!Well, I think enhancement is great for pre-30, especially with the patch. You see, we now never go OOM while we still DPS really good. What elemental helps, helps enhancement even more.
And people choose this guide for leveling as an enhancement shaman, why would I make an alternate leveling strategy? I get your idea but I don’t think it’s worth it.
And thanks for adressing that little mistake 😀
Well, my experience is thatWell, my experience is that totems are a mob-pulling nuisance that shouldn’t be used on trash. They have their uses of course, but getting adds from the totems is very annoying and tend to negate the benefits they give.
So, they are all situational.
Great guide!
I actuallyGreat guide!
I actually believe Elemental is best for leveling pre 30’s. You will only have to compete for gear with Balance Druids and Enhancement only stars to shine when you pick up talents post level 30.
If you want to level Elemental for the first levels, make sure you store a second set of Enhancement gear so the respec is more smooth.
You might want to mention this as an ‘Alternate Leveling Strategy’?
By the way, you have listed 7. Stats and then 7. Gear, I think the latter is meant to be 8. Gear :P.
Oh..I thought STR gave AP more so then Agi, I thought Agi just gave like crit / dodge.
1 STR = 2 AP, well so I thought.
I guess I need to recheck my shaman.
Great guide ^^, should help people out with spec and what gear to get to help them level.
[EDIT]
Seems like stats are same as a Rogue.
1 agi = 1 AP
1 str = 1 AP
If your total STR is 300 = 290 AP
If your total AGI is 300 = 290 AP
Well now I know thxs ^^
Sorry to bother again, butSorry to bother again, but I’m playing a shaman and I’ve some doubts about the totems: which are the best while leveling? I have 3 totems now but I think that Stoneskin is better… any tips? Thanks 😛
This is much betterThis is much better Trollvink, good job!
AddedMaybe you have already saw it, but i’ve added the stats and items ’till level 60, if you farm the PvP weps, those will bring you to 70, so outland items will come later.
PS: there all instance loot.
You are great! Thanks againYou are great! Thanks again 🙂 I will leave feedback as I level 😛
Thanks!Hey man, thanks for your feedback. I will add those things to the guide!
Only 1 thing missing!Hey man, this looks pretty good! I’ve never played a shaman since the class does not inspire me, but after this guide I’ll make a shammy.
This guide is what a class guide should be: you say how spend the talent points, you say the best rotation with the spell we’ve got!
The thing missing, in my opinion, is that you should add a part in “Tips” where you say what stats are better and maybe add some nice blue items to use for 10 levels or so. Such as Jame did in his Rogue guide. I say this because I haven’t an idea on what a shaman (enhan. spec) should get as main stats.
Thanks for the guide 😛
Looks good so far.
CouldLooks good so far.
Could use some discussion about/walkthrough of the class quests also. “Where is Kranal Fiss?”, is an all too common question on Barrens chat.
Yup, I recently wrote aYup, I recently wrote a guide to make text formatting ezmode!

QuestionAh ok, you have any page, link or w/e for some information to add colors, simple links and image’s
And I’ll make you proud 😉
I put the other 2 shamanI put the other 2 shaman leveling guides back to draft status, since they were very outdated. Now your guide is the only one showing in the Shaman guide section, so make us proud! :p
Hey, this looksHey, this looks promising.
Suggestions:
1. Add some colors, especially to the levels, to make it easier to seperate level and information.
2. add wowhead link to the skills, this is always useful and makes the guide look much better
