Preface:
This guide is more about dealing with getting ganked more than it is about avoiding getting ganked. If you spend a whole lot of time trying to avoid PVP it’s going to eat up much more time than if you just die and get back to work. If your goal is to level fast and avoid distractions please read on, if you want to enjoy a little pvp while leveling just do the opposite of what I suggest and I can almost guarantee you’re going to be waist deep in the opposite faction.
Ziah’s guide to dealing with PVP while leveling with the WoW-Pro Addon:
Some zones can be a big slow down while you’re leveling with the WoW-Pro Addon due to all the ganking going on. I managed to breeze through these hot spots pretty quickly with just a few simple (and passive) rules that minimize down time. I want to share these methods I used to help you make the recovery time as fast as possible.
Before we get into the methods it’s important you live by my mantra…
You are going to get killed! Get over it!
Pre-emptive medicine…
I suggest that if the area you’re in is occupied, just move to another area and do something else. If all your quests are in the same area, go grind somewhere nearby but out of sight for a few minutes. Chances are the other player will move on shortly. Most zones may seem very open but there are a lot of little hidden nooks that you can grind for 10 minutes or so in peace while you wait for an enemy player to vacate the area.
Three simple rules if a high level player attacks you…
1. Do not run away!!
Just stand there and die. Don’t even bother fighting back. You’re not going to kill a level 85! Why spend 10 minutes getting chased, hiding, getting killed halfway across the zone a mile from where you need to be when you can just die and then take 2 minutes to get back to your body, rez up and go back to killing your monsters and such. When I use this tactic they get bored really fast because it shows you just don’t care and you’re going to continue what you were doing whether they are there or not.
2. Do not emote!!
Instigating someone that is killing you just makes them mad or gets them all worked up to want to kill you again. They are trying to get an emotional response from you. If you do not give it to them, they look for someone else that will.
3. Don’t worry about the chat window!!
It’s PVP! We know what goes on. Complaining and begging for help is much more of a slowdown than just pushing through the distractions and getting killed a few times. You have a task. Focus!!
The simple rules if you come across an equal or lower level player than you…
1. Do not gank them!!
That’s when they get their level 85 main and grief you. Just give them a pass and let them know you did so by giving a /wave or something. This way they know you could have gotten the jump on them but didn’t. People tend to pay the favor back and leave you alone. Remember, they are leveling too.
2. Let them win!!
If they attack you, fight back but do NOT kill them. This keeps them from trying to get the “revenge” kill. They are generally satisfied with their “win” and they want to go back to leveling too.
If they want to continue to “dual†you because they think you’re weak and can get a few easy kills, you can just move on for the time being and come back to that leveling area once that player is done there. Of course you give them a nice taste of what you can really do so they understand that you let them win. Again, I would avoid laying the killing blow, just let them see your not a lightweight and can just as easily kill them. They will probably not bother with you again, and since you didn’t lay that killing blow revenge from their main won’t be needed.
In closing…
I got killed about 2-10 times a day leveling. Using the methods above I managed to not get slowed down a whole lot and was able to move on time. I will be editing this or adding to it If I think of anything else but these few basic tactics are very useful in keeping your play time productive even though you’re on a PVP server.
(Updated 8/13/10)
AgreeThis is one of the best guides I’ve used. The team here is very responsive to bug fixes. Leveling my mage from 80-85. Just made 81 last night…all through this leveling guide. It was the easiest level up I’ve done. I really have to hand it to this team.
To me, this guide looks likeTo me, this guide looks like a really good list of tips on how to deal with PvP while leveling, so instead of limiting the guide to tips that can be used while leveling with the WoW-pro addon (which can cause some misconception), perhaps the title of the guide should more accurately be something in the lines of: “Ziah’s guide to dealing with PVP while leveling”.But still, a great guide that can really come in handy!
Hmmm, I suppose it is a bitHmmm, I suppose it is a bit more specific than general leveling tips. It *is* a list of tips though!Still, I think I was overzealous in my guide archiving 😉 I’ll move it back, and glad to see you still checking into the site! EDIT: Since you made an effort to check in and make sure it’s up to date, I decided to go ahead and bump it to the front page, too!
GuideI would like to put this back as a guide. its quite a bit longer than a short list (its almost as big as the entire leveling tips wiki). Jame liked it enough to add a link to it on all the leveling guides and there are no other guides on the same subject matter. ~Z
A leveling tips wiki hasA leveling tips wiki has been created as a catch-all for short, list of tips types guides such as this one. Since we really don’t need multiple guides of the same subject as long as the guide we have is high quality, I’m moving all other “Leveling Tips” guides to Work in Progress mode.
Feel free to contribute to the leveling tips wiki. If you feel your tips are significant to justify a full guide, feel free to release them as such – but if they are just a short list of tips, I will probably stop by and move them back to Work in Progress mode!
UpdateJust cleaned up my long drag on sentences and updated for Cataclysm and the WoW-Pro Addon 🙂
Very Nice Guide.Very Nice Guide.
GankingI have to add an incident that made a huge impact on me when I first started playing – I was one of those ignorant noobs who thought I could attack a high level just because everyone else was doing it. This rogue, instead of just swatting me aside, stealthed and sapped me, then just left. That made me really think, and since then, I have been more “polite” to players with lower level characters instead of trying to get revenge by ganking as I have been ganked.
On the server I play (ArathiOn the server I play (Arathi FR) the opposite teams somehow always wait your respawn. The easiest way to go through it is making yourself “disappear” in the game by disconnecting. You just need to wait one minute then to connect back.
Great guideI’d like to say that this guide is good and it might help alot of people, but it actually depends on the horde/alliance balance on the server. On my server it like 4,5k horde vs 500 alliance in total so on every little inch in STV there are hordes ganking you and they got all those small hidden grinding spots covered. With that said I wanna say you’re guide is good 😛
Since i got a 70 i found an alternative solution for this part of the guide though. Get 1 of your equal leveled friends that also got a 70 char to trade boosts. Like I get him trough SM armory/lib until it says we entered to many time, then he go with my char trough it. Its quick leveling. it actually lets you enter again directly after you traded boosts. So it might look like this: You boosted: 10 times –> He Boosted: 10 times –> You boosted: 10 times and so on. It’s no big deal!
Keep up the Leveling and good luck on PVP servers
