Jame’s Leveling Guide: AddOn Version – Works in Progress

You are currently viewing a Wiki Page. It can be edited by anyone who is currently logged in. Before you change anything, please make sure to read our FAQ, the editing guidelines of this post as well as its comments.

This wiki page will help us track who has volunteered to help translate sections of Jame’s Leveling Guides into TourGuide Format, so that we can finally publish an addon that will enable people following Jame’s Guide to do so without alt-tabbing.

Read Me!

Before you sign in for testing, revamping or writing a guide for the AddOn you should read the following two pages:

Now that you know what to do, you can take a look at the overview lists for the two factions. It might look a bit confusing on first sight but it’s really easy:

In the Status column you can see what the current status of every guide is:

N/A The guide has not been written yet (not available)
Testing The guide has been written but not been tested by anyone but the author.
Improvements The guide has been written and tested, but it needs improvements. Numbers behind the status will forward you to posts with information on the needed improvements.
Quality The guide has been tested, revamped and has a very good quality. The stars indicate how well the guide has been tested. A quality guide with one star has only been tested by one person so there might still be some flaws.

Now that you’re informed about what needs to be done, you have to look at the Progress column if the guide is already in work.

A indicates that there is no one working on this guide at the moment, so feel free to do it!

A tells you that there is someone working on that guide, if you click on the icon you will be redirected to the editors user-page.

Before you start editing a guide you should look if there are some edited files that are not included in the AddOn by default.

If the download arrow is green it means that there are files to download. Just click the arrow to download them. Put those files into the folder of the according Guide Package AddOn.

The little lamp will redirect you to a section on the “Mistakes” page. There you can see a list of known mistakes in the guide. You should take a look at this list even if the guide is not marked for Improvements!

If you found a guide that suits you and no one else is working at, you can either write a comment so that someone can add you to the list, or you can try to add yourself.

Please give us an update every week (at least) by changing the Last Updated column and giving some information about your progress in the Progress column so that everyone who wants to know can check how far you are. If we don’t hear from you in over a week, and someone else wants to take over revising/writing that section of the guide, it’s fair game! This way parts of the guide won’t be left unfinished.

If you’ve finished your part add a link to the file you edited in the Progress column and leave a comment!

w00t? Have I insultedw00t? Have I insulted someone in some way? If so I appologise. If it wsa for picking the name Lars, i’ll happily go make another account with a new name.
If it was for something I’ve said about the guide, then nothing can overrule the fact that these I have tried so far are awsome!
If I havn’t done anything, then nvm 🙂

    Fantastic, Jiyambi

    RightFantastic, Jiyambi 🙂

Right now I’m at the start of the Un’Goro guide with my 53 mage, and so far I’ve found 0 bugs !

I’ll keep testing as soon as I can, but I’m going away this week.

    Also using english client.

Uh, I didn’t think that theUh, I didn’t think that the name thing would become a problem that quick… And no, I think linking the mistaes page with wow-pro won’t happen because I don’t know and I don’t think that jame want’s me to fiddle on the wow-pro server (and of course it’s sooo much work *lazy*)

I think I will change the whole thing to be anonymous, to prevent name stealing like that, and moderated that every bug report needs to be accepted by an admin (as it’s already the case with editing)

The new mistakes page reallyThe new mistakes page really is very nice. Good job Jahwo!

Only the name thing seems to be problematic. Maybe you can put it together with the CMS over here at wow-pro so that it’s linked to user accounts here?

I just found what I believeI just found what I believe to be 2 spelling mistakes on this page:

If the download arrow is green it means that there are files to download. Just click the arrow to download them. Put those files into the ‘older’ of the according Guide Package AddOn

I think it is supposed to say ‘folder’

    Also:

Before you start ‘editiing’ a guide you should look if there are some edited files that are not included in the AddOn by default.

It is supposed to say ‘editing’

  • img
    Mar 22, 2009 @ 6:46 am

Um yeah. Even if that was aUm yeah. Even if that was a joke it was completely inappropriate. Not okay.

EDIT: It also looks like you can put your name as whoever you want it to be. That’s sort of problematical for cases such as this…

Horde 51-60 COMPLETE!Hey folks, I know some of you have been waiting, so here it is! The packet includes an updated guide index file so the guides will show up in game. I also basically chopped the Hellfire Peninsula guide in half and included that version of it as well, for those who want to go to HFP at 58, then go back to Azeroth for the rest of the guide, and then return at 60. Let me know if you have any questions.

Overall the quality should be pretty high. There were a few cases where the guide behaved erratically, completing steps that shouldn’t have been completed. I am *hoping* this is due to my frequent UI resets, and that it just got confused. But this section does need more testing before it gets a quality star.

I also came across the grog problem while updating them, and I *thought* I went back in and added the quest accept step, but I may have forgotten.

In any case, check and make sure you have the most recent update. If you do, please let me know and I will go in and try to fix those steps. Thank you!

    Client versionDear Lars,

first of all thanks for supporting us with the addon version!

To your problem with Dustwallow Marsh (43) – Lack of Surplus…
Are you using the English client version of WoW? With other language clients there are known issues with waypoint placement when being sent to other zones than the one you are currently in.

Jame’s 41-51Hey, I’m currently at level 47, going through the horde guides, I’ve got two things so far for Jame’s 41-51:
    Stranglethorn Vale – Stranglethorn fever:
When i complete the quest whith the 3 gorilla waves, it does not mark the quest as completed in the little box on my screen, so it does not move on to the next step: Scaring Sharky, and not even if i manually click the checkmark. Did the two quests and ran back to Booty Bay, and first when I had handed in the quest it decided to move on.

Dustwallow Marsh (43) – Lack of Surplus
The quest Lack of Surplus is in Swamp of sorrows, at the east coast, but for some reason the mark on my map, and the arrow which leads way, is at Dustwallow Marsh.

EDIT: I’ve just hit The Hinterlands, and got completed the Cortello’s Riddle (part 3) and am standing at the waterfall. Now I’m getting told to pick bottles up for a quest called “Whiskey Slim’s Lost Grog” which I do not have, and I am sure that I have not been told to get it. To be sure i just checked the online guide, and no.. That quest is not there. I’m confused 🙂

Ah, problem is the indexAh, problem is the index file isn’t updated yet, so the guides won’t show in game. I’ll upload an updated index file shortly and link it here.

Hey folks, just an update onHey folks, just an update on the Horde 51-60 addon section which I am currently writing. I’ve got up to lvl 57 done and tested. There were a few minor bugs that I am not 100% sure got fixed as I went (they were things I couldn’t test on the same character, for example the next step auto-completing when I turned in a quest for some reason). So more testing on those would be great, but overall I think they are pretty high quality. The work-in-progress file can be found here if anyone is desperate for it before it’s complete 😉

If I had to make a guess,If I had to make a guess, I’d say you’d done something or another out of order, and as Missing Mag’hari procession is a ‘breadcrumb’ (i.e, one quest that leads you to a chain from a hub, but isn’t actually necessary) it’s possible that you either already have taken the quest after, or you’ve already done a quest while removes your availability to take the quest.

This probably won’t make ‘Nagrand Slam’ much harder, though, as by the time you’ve done all the quest necessary to get it, you’ll have a few more left over for you to do that aren’t to challenging, so it doesn’t really matter.

  • img

Horde Nagrand guideIn the Horde Nagrand guide (both add-on and regular versions), there is a step to turn in “Missing Mag’hari Procession, but the NPC listed as the questgiver on WoWHead won’t give me the quest. I was able to get the next quest in the chain, so it isn’t really holding me up, but I wanted to know if anybody can confirm if this quest is still in the game, or requires a specific level of Mag’Hari rep?

74-75 Dragonblight by RhovanionI gave this one a whirl while questing through Dragonsblight. I can’t vouch for how closely it follows Jame’s guide, since I only referred to the web version a couple of times, but this guide has been more glitch-free than any other of the wow-pro guides I’ve used, and I’m only a few quests from the end. Caveat – I have completed most of the group quests, but don’t intend to complete the rest.

When I did refer to the online version of the guide, I did find that it matched up. Thanks for the work you did. Excellent job, Rhovanion.

Shinke’s Tauren Starter (1-12) UpdateI implemented the |U| Tag for the last Druid quest.

I also added a note that you can leave out “Supervisor Fizsprocket”, since it might be quite hard sometimes. I remind you to do this quest on a later occasion though.

    That’s all for now.

The only downside is that due to the mechanics of tourguide you have to cancel the Quest in order to go on, which involves a little bit of extra running around later on. You could work around it by using a kill Tag for Fizsprocket and working with notes for accepting and completing. The “optional” Tags in Tourguide involve to drop the quest in order to go an anyway, so they won’t help.

I will work an that in the next days. I hope there’s nothing else to be done after that. We’ll see.

Horde: 31-41 StrangletthornHey, just trying the last part of the 31-41 addon out, and it’s awsome 😀 only one thing I have noticed so far is:
[37] Goblin Sponsorship (Part 4) : The small hourse with the footbocker appears to be at coords (43,20) and not the (42,20), which on my screen is in the water 🙂
Keep up the good work 🙂

Gethe, yup the starting areaGethe, yup the starting area was fine.

    * I did incorrectly mention the Argent Dawn quest. After testing I discovered that you’re correct. “Mission Accomplished!” is the same.

    * No idea regarding the Jerimiah/Charm quests. Only thing I can think of is a level issue. My DK was 61 when attempting to do quest(s). I belive the quest is [52], so I should have been able to take it.

    * my confusion of on the “Shopping List”. I did Jame’s plagueland guides a few weeks back and these items were collected in the “Mini-grind” section.

FYI, aside from a couple of coord issues and a few note issues, the guide plays well. I just completed with my DK.

Oh yeah, by the way, running a DK through Plaguelands freakin’ rocks!

Phuze, thanks for thePhuze, thanks for the comments. I’d actually disagree with point 3.

I find the opposite more frustrating. When you see a line named “Complete ABC” quest, there’s no context. A “C” tagline is the same for kills, collect, loot and use quests. This means, for most folks, you have to hover over the quest to look at the note for further instructions.

For me, I like the use of Auto-completing “K” and “N” tag lines. I feel, when used effectively, these convey the most information in the shortest amount of time. Plus, they are the best way to guarantee coordinates for each phase of a quest. Not to mention, for quests like The Shimmering Flats in the 31-41 guide, they’re the only way to go. Finally, a series of auto-completing “K” tags allow you to track you progress on hunting quests without an additional addon.

In fairness, the biggest disadvantage is that Tourguide doesn’t seem to handle these well when you insert yourself in the middle of a guide.

Just my opinion. Again, thanks for the discussion. 🙂

I tested the Mage classI tested the Mage class quest for the 1-12 Troll/Orc guide and found some slight problems.

The quest ‘Speak with Un’thuwa’ mentions a mage trainer in Razor Hill. No such trainer exist, so you have to take it in Orgrimmar, which also means that missing co-ordinates (39, 86) needs to be added.

Also, when turning in the follow-up and final quest ‘Ju-Ju Heaps’ it might be useful to add a HS to Razor Hill item for mages.

Thanks very much for theThanks very much for the advice!

I definitely agree with this one, and I will add it to the common mistakes in the “How to the Contribute”.

Also agree, this is somewhat explained in the “How to Contribute” page as well. There are *some* cases, generally only in cities and between circuits, when I could see there being a reason to have two notes in a row – for example one saying to sell/train/restock and a second afterward noting to get certain items out of the bank. That sort of note might be missed as a |N| text explanation of the first note, and is very important for the next section of the guide. But, for the most part, I agree.

For this one, sometimes it can really help in guide writing to break these up. When the mobs are all in the same area it definitely makes more sense to use a C type step rather than a K type step. But sometimes steps are broken up – killing one type of mob, doing something else, then killing the next type. In those cases, the K type objective is the best one to use.
Anyway, thank you for the feedback!

Just a few things that I’ve noticedFirst and foremost, thanks a lot to all of the people who have taken the time to work on this version of the guides, as you’re seriously saving my chronically leveling self a whole bunch of time. Running through the guides I’ve noticed a few things that are mostly cosmetic in nature, but have lead me to enough frustration that I’ve actually learned to write guides so I can make things how I like them.

    What I’ve noticed is:
A} A tendency to forget about the |Z| tag. This needs to be used if the location of a waypoint is not in the same zone as the guide is written for. If you don’t do this the guide assumes the waypoint is for the zone of the guide (I figured this out when I ran from Dragonblight to Grizzly Hills and back, because I didn’t read the quest and just followed the arrow).
    B) An over reliance on notes (N, not |N|. There really isn’t a reason, at least that I can think of, for there to be more than 2 (at the extreme most) notes in a row, as most of the information can be consolidated into one, and a single note can hold multiple waypoints, so there’s no need to break it up for that.
    C) Using the Kill (K) unnecessarily. If I’m going to be doing all of quest A at a time I don’t need a K for mob1, mob2 and mob3, instead just add a note(|N|) to the C line giving me the instructions and any waypoints. This will also let the addon load all of the next quest objectives.

Again, thanks a whole bunch to all of you who’ve worked on these addons, you’ve really made my life a whole lot easier.

some info“Argent Dawn Commission” does not touch the quest log, you talk to the npc and press complete, and hence will not trigger TourGuide to advance, because TG checks the log and not quest events. In response to that I made it a note with a loot tag to auto complete when you receive an item. There are a few others like this, but some of them do not have static loot.

I played through this guide as i was making it and again before it was submitted and on both runs i have not had any problems with “The Jerimiah Blues” or the Charm quest lines, so i’m not sure what the problem may be.

PS: What did you think of the DK starting area? Was it ok despite the lack of coords?

Doesn’t look like anyone isDoesn’t look like anyone is currently working on it. It’s definitely better if the person testing also does the revisions, that way he or she can make exactly the changes he or she saw needed to be made. So yeah, go for it, but if you decide to revise it let’s put your name up on the list 🙂 You doing Horde or Alliance?

I’ve found some issues withI’ve found some issues with the Horde DK (Western Plaguelands) Guide:

    * “Return to Bulkark” quests need to be seperated inyo “Part”s
    * Argent Dawn quest should be “A” not “N” tag so auto-completes
    * Dalson circut needs work; mainly, set auto-complete guidelines
    * “Unfinished Business…” quests need some work
    * “So Called Mark…” quest line needs coords
    * “The Jerimiah Blues” and Charm quest lines were not available to DK. I don’t know if this is normal or not, but my DK unable to take quests. It was late, so I did not research too much.
    * Better notes on “Wildlife Suffers” part 2
    * better notes/placement of “Shopping List” tag line. It’s a bit confusing because the items are drops in Eastern Plaguelands.

Yo J, I’m running through the DK guide now and am happy to write the changes; just don’t wanna step on toes. Unless their my own of course 😉

I think that’s one pointI think that’s one point where i did it a little different from what shinke told.

I thought quite a bit about that, you could include it after doing arra’chea and so on. But I guess you wouldn’t be able to accept Hunter’s Way then. You’d have to go back to Bloodhoof Village more often that way. I will have a look at it again though… Maybe you can rearrange it to make it a little bit easier.

Snowflake’s Blood Elf Leveling guide (1-12) I’m done testing this section, and it really impressed me.

I dinged 12 in 3 hours 30 minutes, even with 9 deaths (hate mages) AND both Tailoring, enchanting and cooking

Tauren Druid CoordsThe co-ords for the bear druid are (39,27) in Moonglade, not the middle of Thunder Bluff. Looks like no more mistakes. Added it to the table.

    Horde 31-41 ImprovementsFound another bug:
For Run objectives, Grom’gol should be Grom’gol Base Camp, otherwise it won’t auto complete. Also, I think the Boat objective is more accurate for going from Ogrimmar to Grom’gol Base Camp than Run.

Also, the wiki needs to be updated once this comment gets approved. My other suggestions are at comment-22884.

I believe I’ve addressed allI believe I’ve addressed all the mistakes in the Horde 41-51 guide, and there are no more mistakes listed for the 31-41 guide. I’ll remove the lamps for those guides, should I delete the mistakes on the mistakes page for the 41-51 guide?
