This wiki page will help us track who has volunteered to help translate sections of Jame’s Leveling Guides into TourGuide Format, so that we can finally publish an addon that will enable people following Jame’s Guide to do so without alt-tabbing.
Before you sign in for testing, revamping or writing a guide for the AddOn you should read the following two pages:
Now that you know what to do, you can take a look at the overview lists for the two factions. It might look a bit confusing on first sight but it’s really easy:
In the Status column you can see what the current status of every guide is:
N/A | The guide has not been written yet (not available) |
Testing | The guide has been written but not been tested by anyone but the author. |
Improvements | The guide has been written and tested, but it needs improvements. Numbers behind the status will forward you to posts with information on the needed improvements. |
Quality | The guide has been tested, revamped and has a very good quality. The stars indicate how well the guide has been tested. A quality guide with one star has only been tested by one person so there might still be some flaws. |
Now that you’re informed about what needs to be done, you have to look at the Progress column if the guide is already in work.
A indicates that there is no one working on this guide at the moment, so feel free to do it!
A tells you that there is someone working on that guide, if you click on the icon you will be redirected to the editors user-page.
Before you start editing a guide you should look if there are some edited files that are not included in the AddOn by default.
If the download arrow is green it means that there are files to download. Just click the arrow to download them. Put those files into the folder of the according Guide Package AddOn.
The little lamp will redirect you to a section on the “Mistakes” page. There you can see a list of known mistakes in the guide. You should take a look at this list even if the guide is not marked for Improvements!
If you found a guide that suits you and no one else is working at, you can either write a comment so that someone can add you to the list, or you can try to add yourself.
Please give us an update every week (at least) by changing the Last Updated column and giving some information about your progress in the Progress column so that everyone who wants to know can check how far you are. If we don’t hear from you in over a week, and someone else wants to take over revising/writing that section of the guide, it’s fair game! This way parts of the guide won’t be left unfinished.
If you’ve finished your part add a link to the file you edited in the Progress column and leave a comment!
Actually, the new addon weActually, the new addon we are working on for the site will be able to do this eventually. We are working on the leveling/questing part of it first, but after that we’re going to make several other modules. One of them is going to be for professions 🙂
hellohey i don’t exactly know how to contact the people that run this site, but i’d like to see if anyone knows of an addon like tourguide but for professions, like skinning mining etc.. and tell you where to go via the tomtom arrow for instance.. you can email me or private message me.
Your welcome to work on thatYour welcome to work on that guide, sure 🙂 I’m sending you a PM with the alpha info. I’m just making sure you understand that Cataclysm is going to completely change old azeroth and none of the old 1-60 guides will be relevant at all anymore.
So am I allowed to makeSo am I allowed to make addon guides like the one I just signed up for?
I really don’t care if my guides are gone when the expansion comes out I just want my guides to be till it comes out.
Yep, basically you can postYep, basically you can post a link for it and we’ll add your updates into the addon. But you should be aware of a few things first:

We’re moving to a new addon format and updates made with the old format in mind won’t do much good. PM me if you want more information about the development of the new addon.

The Old World (Azeroth) stuff will be pretty much useless when the expansion comes out, so I wouldn’t devote too much time and energy to it. Outland and Northrend probably won’t change much. However if you are simply leveling an alt through the 30s and want to make updates as you go, well that’s a different story and you can feel free to do so :)
Thanks again for your interest in helping out!
Val – you are welcome to letVal – you are welcome to let your friends use your guide, and we may use it as well, but I’ll be quite frank with you: in the new version of the guide we are only going to have ONE guide for each starter zone. It’s just too confusing for new users to our guide to have multiple guides for each zone. So we’ll either pick whichever guide the addon team seems to think is best, or we’ll make some sort of combination of them. So no, there is no guarantee we will be using your guide, though if you are talking about specifically an addon guide (not a “paper” guide here on the site) we may at least use the one you write as a framework and edit it.
Essentially – we can’t promise anything so please do not be upset if your guide is not used!
Jame’s Horde Leveling Guide (31-41)I can work on Jame’s Horde Leveling Guide (31-41) I will post every week my progress and I promise you I wont abandon it. I’ll look for errors while testing it. But when I’m done and everyone looks good to me what do I do?
Do i upload it to a site and give you guys the link? What do I do after I think everything is working!!!!
And after you get the link what do you do with it?
I’ll help on other projectsI’ll help on other projects I just wanted to have one of my OWN guides on the addon to show my friends on WoW.
OH PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!Please oh please use this Iv’e been working really hard on this guide when I’m done I really want this to be accepted.
We already have two taurenWe already have two tauren starter guides here on WoW-Pro. I would definitely suggest working on a different project, or perhaps working with one of the authors of the current guides to improve them, rather than creating a third one. However if you really feel the guide you are creating will be significantly better than the two we already have, then please post it 🙂
Question! I’m making a Tauren Starting Guide but there is already one, am I still allowed to make one that YOU WILL ACCEPT?
RE: A Couple ThingsThank you for telling me all the erros I had. I will try and keep making guides and uploading it to everyone on WoW-Pro.
1 more thing. What are the quests for other classes because at the end of your reply it said you have to write C|druid|R|tauren. So what are the other quests for other classes?
If ANYONE KNOWS PLEASE REPLY!!!!!
Thanks for the awesomeThanks for the awesome response, looks correct and to the point to me 🙂
A couple thingsFirst off, the version of the guide that uses the header format you have has been discontinued. For details on the new one coming out see Revized WoW-Pro Addon. The new one works more or less like the old one with a few addition (which I won’t cover here).
First thing to check, as noted by Jiyambi, is make sure it is listed in the guide.xml.
Your line would look like:
This should add it to the list.
That said, I noticed a couple issues with the file itself that would need fixed so it would function.
The end of the file needs to have:
]]
end)
This closes the guide and function out. Then just add the additional steps between your last one and that closing.
Also your second step:
K Plainstrider|747|L|4740 7|N|Kill Plainstriders untill you have 7 feathers and 7 meat. (46.15, 80.04)|
It is missing the |QID| before the 747.
After that it should work fine. I didn’t test it with those changes, but I didn’t see anything else off hand that would stop it from functioning.
The Verdant Note is just for the Druids, so you need to let the guide know that so it doesn’t show it to other classes.
Something like:
|C|Druid|R|Tauren|
This locks it into just Tauren Druids, so say a Tauren Hunter won’t see a quest they can’t pick up come up in the guide, who would need:
T Etched Note |QID|3092|C|Hunter|R|Tauren|
(The |R|Tauren| is probably optional, not too many other races would probably be coming through the area in a way to pick up the quests, but it would stop the guide from showing them the quest if they did.)
RE: DiD you add an entry for itI’m not sure if you got my other comment reply to you so here it is again:
I put this in the guide.xml file.
Is that correct? I have the addon swatter. Swatter tells me all bugs in the game and it said for my file something on line 17 was incomplete.
Maybe you should look at that.
RE: DiD you add an entry for itI put in the Guides.xml file this:
Did I do that correct?
Also did you see the file I made and did you see any errors in that?
Did you add an entry for itDid you add an entry for it in the Guides.xml file? If you did not, it will not load. If you did, let me know and I’ll help you troubleshoot more.
Tauren Starting ZoneHere is the link to the file. http://www.filefront.com/16594749/000_1_12_Yuval_Tauren_Starter.lua.zip
Just 1 problem……
IT NEVER LOADS ON TO MY WOW GAME
I tried everything. I thought someone could look at the file and reply back with the link to the new file with the errors gone.
FYI: I only did lv. 1-3. I was just trying to test out the program. Oh and I’m using a mac.

Heh sorry about that. I’llHeh sorry about that. I’ll add it up there. We haven’t been updating the old guide pages much since work on a new addon is in progress.

Thanks!

Glad you got it figured outGlad you got it figured out 🙂
Figured it out for #3…At the top of the LUA file, instead of listing the next file in the series, I had listed its own file name. So basically, it was trying to load itself in a loop, causing it to freeze.
This has been fixed and updated/re-posted:

Tourguide updateTourguide was updated on WOWI a few hours ago
I can shine some light onI can shine some light on why #3 might happen, though I’m not sure. At the end of a guide, Tour Guide automatically tries to load the next guide. But if there’s not another guide or the listed guide can’t be found, it may freeze.
The other two issues, I have no idea >_<
Storm Peaks Guide for AddonStorm Peaks guide for Alliance:
http://www.filefront.com/16320891/002_79_80_Cyberlamb_Storm_Peaks.lua/
3 issues that I have found after testing:
1) Although the correct item # is in the code to display the Icemaw Bear Flank to be used on Jormuttar, it still displays the Everfrost Razor
2) When beginning the quest to kill the Iron Colossus, the flight arrow takes you to where the Iron Colossus is instead of to the Jormungers that you need to control to begin the quest. Coordinates do not over-ride.
3) When you turn in the final quest for the guide, the game freezes. I have compared the code to other guides and cannot figure out what would cause this.
Thoughts?
They’re not missing…Those quests are race specific to Blood elves, therefore the guide was edited to not show those quests to the other Horde races, because they can’t access them. Blood elves are stingy with the rep.
