FinaL.FreeDoM's 1-60 Grinding Guide
(1 vote)
Hello all! I have read Jame's Alliance Leveling Guide and I have to say it is one of the best guides I have ever seen. I have yet to try it but I know it will be a very useful guide to anyone who wants to level fast. I too have also leveled very quickly. I used to believe grinding was more efficient than questing, until I read Jame's Alliance Guide. Questing really is the way to go, but you have to know exactly what you're doing, otherwise you will cost yourself hours, even days of downtime from finding where everything is, what mobs to kill, where to look for them, how to kill them, etc. This guide was written for the people who do not know the quests, but just do not have the patience to learn them and still want to level fast.
But first, let me name some pros and cons of grinding, before you decide if this is really the way you want to level.
Pros:
1.) Good Experience. My highest rate of experience in grinding has been 35k/hour non-rested, on a druid in cat form. I do not know how fast questing can possibly give you, but this is still pretty damn good!
2.) Easy. All you have to do is run around in a circle and kill mobs, and watch your mana and health, whereas questing you have to know where to go, where to find the best place to kill the mobs, etc. And because it is easy, you can solo all you want, without having to waste time on trying to find someone to help you, thus letting you level easier.
3.) Money. You can get a lot of nice BoE's and vendor loot from places, and you can either vendor them for good amounts or sell them on the Auction House. Many places I will give you in this guide will give you good loot to sell on the Auction House.
Cons:
1.) Boring. Be warned. Grinding is painfully BORING!! Repeatedly killing the same mobs over and over again, running the same path over and over again for hours on end will get very old. If you want to grind, have some of your favorite music CD's playing so you have something to think about. If you do not think you can handle the boredom, then stop reading now and do not attempt grinding, or you will cause yourself even more downtime than questing, even if you do not know the quests.
2.) Rewards. Questing gives you consistent rewards and reputation bonuses. Though some of the time grinding does give you nice world drops and reputation bonuses (I.E. Argent Dawn), the items you'll pick up from grinding will most likely be sold than you actually using them. Quests often let you choose your rewards, thus giving you things that you can actually use.
3.) Efficiency. I used to firmly believe that questing was very inefficient. Nobody could ever prove me wrong. But then I stumbled upon Jame's Alliance Guide...and I was amazed at the level of detail that he put into his guide. It was then that I realized that questing is very efficient, more efficient than grinding, if you know what you are doing. But if you do not know quests very well, and want to get level 60 ASAP, grinding is still the way to go IMO. If you are in no rush to get to level 60, just learn the quests, it's a lot more fun. Once you know the quests very well, you will be a very fast leveler. One guy got level 60 in 4 days and 20 hours simply from questing. I do not think this is possible with grinding.
4.) The game! If you wish to grind all the way to 60, also be warned that you will miss out on a lot of aspects of World of Warcraft. You will miss bits of storyline, some nice action scenes, challenges, and other stuff that Blizzard put much work into. If you are a first-time player, I recommend that you do not rush to level 60, and take it slower and enjoy everything WoW has to offer. Whether you want to rush to 60 is completely up to you, but this is what I recommend.
With that out of the way, let's get started on the guide, shall we?
Just a few things to remember when grinding.
1. Get First Aid. This is a very useful skill with ALL classes, even those than can heal. Why use mana and cause more downtime when you can heal yourself for no mana? Many mobs I will set you up against will drop cloth, so you will not have to worry about using up all your cloth. If you run out of cloth, just pick up some food and drinks (if your class uses mana of course).
2. Don't go AFK! This can create bad downtime. Obviously, you will not get optimal EXP if you go AFK for whatever reason. Keep your AFK times to a minimum.
3. Watch your money. Use http://www.thottbot.com/ to check how much your skills will cost at each level. If you are coming up short, then visit the vendor more often when your inventory is full.
4. Be as efficient with your health/mana/rage as possible! The less mana you use and the less health you lose, the less time you spend eating/drinking. This is very important when grinding. Keep this in mind when you choose your talent spec also.
This is how I leveled and I thought it was great. I'd STRONGLY urge you to check out Jame's Alliance Leveling guide though. It truly is an amazing guide. But if you don't feel like putting in so much effort and just want a lazy way to get level 60 fast, this is your guide.
Levels 1-13 : Just do all the quests in the zone you start in. They are all fairly easy and give you good experience. If you need help, just ask around in General Chat, there are plenty of other lowbies around to help you. During these levels, be sure to pick up First Aid and level it up, even if you are a class that can heal. This skill will prove to be very useful. Expected EXP Rate: 8-12k/hr
Levels 13-17 Head to Westfall, if you are not already there. Along the northwestern shore of Westfall, there are crabs around level 13-14 that you can grind on. Grind on these guys, and be sure to open up the clam shells when your inventory gets full. Sometimes there are Small Lustrous Pearls inside those shells, and those and the trash they drop sell for a good amount. Expected EXP rate: 9-13k/hr
Levels 17-24 Now you head to the southwestern shore of Westfall, near the Lighthouse. There are more crabs to grind on, but now they are level 17-18. Like before, be sure to open up the clam shells. You may also want to consider running Deadmines for some nice gear upgrades, but you will also most likely have slower experience rates while doing Deadmines. Expected EXP rate: 14-19k/hr
Levels 24-26 Just do the quests you can in Darkshire. You should be able to do many of them. Stop when all the quests become tough. By the time that happens, you will be level 26. As you do the quests, pay attention to what you have to do in each, because many of the quests are done at Raven Hill or near Raven Hill. Minimize the time you have to spend running between Darkshire and Raven Hill.
Expected EXP Rate: 14-17k/hr
Level 26-29 Grind on the Skeletal Horrors and Skeletal Fiends at Raven Hill. If there are too many people grinding on them, then try the area to the east of the Fiends/Horrors, where there are lots of ghouls to grind on. Expected EXP Rate: 15-18k/hr.
Level 29-33 This is where grinding gets really good! Just north of Darkshire, around the Mistmantle Manor, there are lots of ghouls to grind on. Kill these guys for Silk Drops and great EXP. Expected EXP Rate: 17-21k/hr
Level 33-38 In Arathi Highlands, west of Refuge Pointe, there is a big area of Ogres that you can grind on. You can either choose to grind in a circle around the cave, or you can also kill the ogres inside of the cave. Very good EXP.
Expected EXP Rate: 18-24k/hr
Level 38-42 To the far north of Dustwallow Marsh at a place called Witch Hill, there are lots of raptors to kill. Be careful with the pulls around here. Very nice vendor loot here, and great EXP. Expected EXP Rate: 20-26k/hr
Level 42-46 At southwestern Badlands, grind on the Greater Rock Elementals. If you do not have enough money for your mount, you probably will have enough after you are done with this place.
Good exp, GREAT vendor loot.
Expected EXP Rate: 17-22k/hr
Level 46-52* At Feralas, in the island north** of Feathermoon Stronghold, there is a cave full of Nagas. This place is exp HEAVEN! The Naga drop clam shells, so be sure to open them up. Sometimes you will get Golden Pearls, which can sell as much as 60 GOLD on the auction house! And the beautiful part is, hardly anybody comes to this area, and VERY seldom there are Horde around! Quite possibly the greatest grinding area in the game IMO. Expected EXP Rate: 27-34k/hr
**EDIT: The island with the cave is SOUTH of Feathermoon Stronghold. Sorry about that.
*Edited 2/24/2007. At 53 and above, some mobs stop yielding experience in the Naga cave.
Level 52-54 After some mobs stop yielding experience in the naga cave, go to southwestern Tanaris. There are lots of Thistleshrub Elementals that you can grind on. Grind these for the next two levels before going to Winterspring.
Level 54-60 At the lake south of Everlook in Winterspring, there are ghosts surrounding the entire lake. Lots of runecloth drop off of these, as well as some good random Blue item drops. I have found Assassination Blade, a few Librams, Four of Warlords, and Stockade Pauldrons from these guys! Grind around the lake, and you will also get some great EXP, and once you hit level 60, you can finally relax now that all the pain of boredom is over. And GRATS!!!
Expected EXP Rate: 26-30k/hr
And that concludes my guide. If you logged out every time you went AFK or took a break, your play time will be at most around 7-9 days total.
Edited 2/24/2007: As for level 60-70 (Burning Crusade), Blizzard did a good job of designing the quests for maximum experience this time around. Questing can give you up to 120k/hr in exp if done correctly. If I can find a way to grind with consistently higher exp rates than that, then I shall write a 60-70 guide. Until then, just quest, it seems to be the best way to level from 60-70, no matter if you know the quests well or not.
Hope this helps you out a lot. Enjoy

'Lucrative'
'Lucrative' means it makes you money, so it isn't really something bad you'd include as a '...but'. Personally, I find grinding just far too dull, so it's much more fun to boot up the levelling addon.
Of course, if it's a class/race I've played 4 or so times through the starter zone already, grinding is tempting.
But still, I'd go with questin any day.
it's nice...when you're bored
I used this guide when I was bored ^^
got a world blue
it's pretty fast way too
I was leveling up a rogue of a friend just for fun (I have to pay my account T_T) and I started from the level 33 (or 32 I don't remember) and within 6 days and 4 hours I got 60, somethings following the guide and another using my own spots (Like the Ogres in the Ruins of Alterac is amazing, a lot Silk and Mageweave Cloth, and I got like 5 or 6 greens in 2 hours, in this time I got 1 level and 50-55% of another (levels 43 and 44), there's a good place to you go when you're 40,41 or 42 cause after it the mobs become green but still give amazing exp/hr.

Wow, I just find it crazy
Wow, I just find it crazy that some players still grind their way up to level 60.
Questing is so much easier, funnier and rewarding nowadays.
This grinding guide was great a couple of years ago, but now I really advise questing through the use of optimal quest circuits. Follow my leveling guides and you'll see the difference
awesome guide
So I have been using this guide since lvl 37, I suck at leveling. Roughly 30 to 90 minutes per lvl until a minimum of lvl 42, which I am at now. Just downloaded 3.0.2 and now ret pallies are godly. With max judgements of the wise at the raptors on witch hill I had no down time at all. Going to use this till 60, plus instances of course. Thanks

A better 42-46 spot
Check out Crystalvein Mine just Northeast of the Gurubashi Arena in Stranglethorn Vale. I do believe I was getting over 30k/hour on the Basilisks inside the cave there. The vendor trash is fantastic, there's a rare mob spawn and a chest location, and even better, all the mobs are skinnable *and* there are several mining nodes that regularly respawn after you hit them. If you're a miner/skinner and a good leveling class I would expect at least 25k experience and 30g an hour (if you AH the ore/skins).

I've recently leveled a new
I've recently leveled a new character while testing my horde guide. Without any rested bonus I hit level 60 with 3 days 22 hours /played.
Currently level 67 with 6 days 15h played. I reckon I'll hit 70 with less than 8 days played, hopefully.
nice guiide
this is really nice guide . I prefer use this guide until level 30 and start use jame guide . u can see drinding from level 1- 30 is faster even in new patch .

After 2.3 I think the ONLY
After 2.3 I think the ONLY reason anyone would want to grind to 60 (not to mention 70) would be a will to run on complete autopilot without figuring anything out. Quests in Azeroth now gives over 10k xp towards the end, one even gave me over 14k, there is just no upside to grinding anymore. No faction, no rewards and it takes longer.
In Outland there is one other upside to grinding, it increases the amount of quests you have left at 70, which means more cash for your epic mount. But if I wanted more quests for cash at 70 I'd rather grind instances, it gives both rep, xp and great rewards. And the loss in xp compared to grinding isn't much if you got a decent group. This works even better if you plan to do fill a non-dps role at 70 as it gives you ten levels of praticing before you hit the 70 scene. I leveled 60-70 as a protection warrior AND holy priest, it gave me alot towards being a endgame healer/tank.
Just a tip, First of all:
Just a tip, First of all: Its easy to hit 60K xp/hr with questing.
Also for questing download: Lightheaded, Nquestlog, Questguru, and TomTom. questing time CUT IN HALF.
Not dissing the guide, in fact I respect anyone who has the patience to grind
, It's just a tip for those without the patience.
New Patch :)
wait till the new godly patch comes out for leveling, grinding will be SO much funner and faster...i hate questing, always have to go to thottbot, so i like this grinding guide
Comments
Some comments I wanted to add:
Levels 36-38: Theres a cave at 54,77 that is another ogre cave and is better after 36. It has 2 chests regularly respawning (lots of pots & 5g ah items) and an enormous amount of mobs if you patrol around the spikes and inside the cave
Levels 38-42: Witch hill is huge according to the map, head for 45,17 and run circuits around that island - you'll quickly pick up a fast circuit. Keep running circuits else the repops behind you will kill you.
good guide
nice guide i jsut finished with the badlands elementals and was unfortunatly only getting 20k xp non rested so it was kinda slow but with rest (had for 2 levels) i was getting around 40-45k xp an hour and was GREAT loot a full inv sold for about 20g not including the ah stuff, good guid.
also for the lvl 33 grinding the ogres start to give really low xp at lvl 37 and 38 but at the circle of inner binding there are rumbling exiles lvl 38 and 39 with are fairly good xp and drop lifeless stone which sell quit nice and somtimes elemental earth which sell for around 1g or more depending on realm, nice guide though cant wait to try the Naga's!
Dragonkin in Dustwallow Marsh
Another great spot for someone around the level 43-47 range are the Dragonkin in Dustwallow Marsh, especially if they're a Skinner! I've been grinding on those. They drop silver, very few grey items (so your bags don't get crowded leaving room for the leather), and you can skin them afterwards. Very ideal for a Skinner.
librams
i was following the guide and i got some librams and i was just wondering if they do anything or if i should just vendor em
Would this work well enough with a warrior?
Good guide all in all. I was just wondering if this guide would be the way to go for a warrior, since they are the most gear dependant class (I think). For me questing has always provided me with majority of my gear during leveling... So is warrior an effective/useable grinding class at all or should I go for quests anyway?
52-54
you never mentioned how much xp per hour you would get in tanaris killing the thistleshrub elmentals but really good guid other than that
Blood Elves
I mostly follow Jame's Leveling Guide but when I need to grind, I follow this guide. Using the two in conjunction brings amazing results. However, at Level 52, Jame's guide sends you to an area to kill Blood Elves. I found this area to be AMAZING experience points. 42000xp per hour after 2 hour leveling there. The Blood Elves are from level 51-52 and are all mages!!! (In other words, they die fast) They also respawn very quickly. Very similar to the Feralas camp from 46-52.
This area is located in Azshara at location 55,26 if you are using Titan Mod. (If not, the area is called Thalassian Base Camp)
Burning Steppes
At 52-54 another good place to grind are the ogres in Burning Steppes! They drop some pretty good items, good silver and runecloth!
Not sure how much exp you get per hour but its a good place to grind. There is also a quest that involves killing them which will help.
thanks
i tryed your guide and i got to lvl 60 in 8 days and was only short 100g from my epic mount and i was just wondering if u were gonna do a 60-70 part
Holy crap 8 days?
Holy crap 8 days?

I've got to level 60 in 5-6
I've got to level 60 in 5-6 days following my guides ;)
Erm...
When you guys are sayin 5-6 days do you mean 5-6days gametime or like 5-6 days playing like 12 hours a day or something?
/played time
If I am not mistaken they are talking about /played time in-game.
Following a grinding guide similar to this one, myself (mage horde alt) and another mage friend double grinded and hit 60 in about 8 days play time. haven't hit 70 with them yet, slowly but surely
Right now we are following Jame's guide and followed Boston's guide and are leveling alliance pally/warrior combo doing quests. being two decently gear dependant classes, the leveling guide is helping us cook thru with quest rewards and we have been replacing grinding sessions with power rushes through instances for loot (sm, ulda, etc). we are currently at 5 days and change play time and lvl 50
what guide you use/what mix you use is in the eye of the beholder. some people (like me) have only played mmo's where all you do is grind all day (cough everquest cough cough), put on some metallica and go at it for hours and are immune to the mind numbing grind, but its always fun to do the quests and get silly things like the furlbog costume and the nifty stopwatch
Aderthad Lothar Horde
Good but
I must be doing something wrong at some points.. cuz I only get around 10k exp max an hour. Same for that cave in feralas.. 10k exp.. it isnt too bad, but i'd expect more ...
Sometimes it gets near 22k (at some early level points) a hour tho.
Anyway, great guide... I feel this quite some better then questing all the time.. I actually mix it a bit, if I wanna do some quests. But mostly grinding + instances.
erm
Hi
This guide while maybe proven effective is mostly grind
Grindign is slow and boring so why grind when u can quest which is faster and more effective?

Sigh
You grind to level alts, so that you can get them raiding. Why must there always be one!?!
:S
might not be a pro at the game but i do know
this guide is called a grinding guide, so if you read it you might aspect theres grinding in it.
I'm a mage what is best

Yeah the ghosties in
Yeah the ghosties in Winterspring are nice, at 55, I think, I was getting near 60k an hour grinding on them, they also dropped 3 Darkmoon Cards
great grinding guide
Ive found this guide very usefull, the spots named are really good, yet can get crowded sometimes (badlands elementals)
Also works good for horde, from a certain level though, cave in ferelas, i agree with ya, is my fav! started grinding there with my rogue at lvl 45, im now 47, and going on at a constant unrested 45k an hour (excluding trips etc though, just the pure xp/hour, including resting).
Great!
Great guide , i truly believe grinding is one of the fastest leveling methods in this game if not the fastest.
I especially liked the westfall grinding part as i have not seen many guides before that tell you to grind crabs in the shores of westfall.
Will give more feedback as I go along with the guide

Good guide, however the ghosts you suggest grinding on from 54-60, if you are talking about the ones at Lake Kel'Theril, i don't see how you say that you should grind on them. At level 55 with a full level of rest I was only getting 600 xp, while before that I was grinding the 48-50 elites at the Grinding Quarry and getting 1400xp per kill. Great guide other than that.
You have to consider other
To mashedpotatoe8:
You have to consider other things. Sure, elites do give off more experience. But another question is, how long does it take for you to kill them? And how much health/mana are you losing per fight? Elites are more likely to take much longer to kill, and also are harder to kill, and thus drains more health/mana out of you. This results in larger downtime, than if you were killing the non-elite ghosts at Lake Kel'Theril. So you could probably rip through many ghosts before having to sit down for a drink or eat, and kill 1, maybe 2, at maximum 3 elites before having to sit down. So in the end, you will probably have a higher exp rate just killing the ghosts, simply because they are easier to kill.
the part for
The part for lvl 33-38 are only 32-34 ogre's and when ur lvl 37 your getting low xp's. But there's another cave that good for 35-38 east of circle of inner binding with lvl 35-38 and good drops
