Affliction Warlock Pre-Raid Gear Guide

Hello and welcome to Rotciv's Affliction Warlock Pre-Raid Gear Guide! My name is Rotciv and in this guide, I'll cover everything you need to know to gear your new level 80 affliction warlock.

This gear guide is up to date as of patch 3.3.3., and some information may become irrelevant or even false in the future.

In this guide, I will list gear that you can acquire from Emblems of Frost, Heroic Dungeon, and Crafted gear. In addition, I will list some dungeon quest gear.

I will list gear in order (from best to worst) and note what I think the best slot for a specific slot Also, I will separate gear with hit rating for the people who need the hit rating.

Finally, I suggest that you use the Dungeon Finder tool to run dungeons as most of the best pre-raid gear are from dungeons and emblems.

Head Slot:
1. Dark Coven Hood - 95 Emblems of Frost
2. Hood of Clouded Sight (Horde) or Helm of Clouded Sight (Alliance) - 75 Emblems of Triumph
3. Tattered Glacial-Woven Hood - Captain's Chest, Halls of Reflection

1. Hood of Smoldering Aftermath (Horde) or Hood of Fiery Aftermath (Alliance) - 75 Emblems of Triumph
2. Sightless Crown of Ulmaas - Marwyn, Heroic Halls of Reflection
3. Gaze of the Unknown - The Black Knight, Heroic Trial of the Champion

The emblem version of the T10 head piece is the best head slot if you do not need the hit rating. If you need the hit rating, grab the Hood of Smoldering/Fiery Aftermath.

Neck Slot:
1. Arcane Loops of Anger - Devourer of Souls, Heroic The Forge of Souls
2. Evoker's Charm - 19 Emblem of Conquest
3. Love's Prisoner - Bronjahm, Heroic The Forge of Souls

1. Wyrmest Necklace of Power - Heroic Judgment at the Eye of Eternity
2. Chain of the Ancient Wyrm - Judgment at the Eye of Eternity
3. Chain of Latent Energies - Drop from Naxxramas

Grab the neck piece from Heroic FoS if you do not need the hit rating; grab the neck piece from the dungeon in Heroic EoE if you need the hit rating

Shoulder Slot:
1. Dark Coven Shoulderpads - 60 Emblems of Triumph
2. Mantle of Revered Mortality (Horde) or Pauldrons of Revered Mortality (Alliance) - 45 Emblems of Triumph
3. Gul'dan's Shoulderpads of Conquest (Horde) or Kel'Thuzad's Shoulderpads of Conquest - 30 Emblems of Triumph

1. Pauldrons of Catastrophic Emanation (Horde) or Mantle of Catastrophic Emanation (Alliance) - 45 Emblems of Triumph
2. Very Fashionable Shoulders Bronjahm, Heroic The Forge of Souls
3. Titan-Forged Shoulderpads of Domination* - 40 Wintergrasp of Honor

Again, emblem version of T10 is the best. If you need the hit rating, grab the Pauldrons/Mantle of Catastrophic Emanation.

* - I try not to include PvP items as some of us do not PvP, but this the 3rd best hit shoulders. The next best, if you do not plan to PvP, is some shoulders from BC raids.

Needs an update

We are recently working on improving the quality of content here on, both by limiting low ranked guides and by moving out of date guides into archives. For more information, see the full news post detailing this process.

This guide needs an update to make sure it is current with patch 4.0. However it still has enough useful information that it will be left in it's proper section as-is.

When Cataclysm is released, this guide will become obsolete, and will be moved to the archive section.

If someone else would like to adopt the guide, or if you have any questions about this process, feel free to comment here.

Working on pre-raid gear

Working on pre-raid gear guide for Cataclysm!

I've played on and off for 3 years and am just now rolling out my first Lock.  Could you make a guide for the basics of leveling a Lock?  Not a leveling guide but a guide to specing and gearing etc for those of us who have questions on our way up the leveling ladder?  My first primary was a Mage so i'm familiar with casters but I'm assuming playing a lock is considerably different.

Hello Talton and thank you for reading my guide!

Yes, I did include Emblem of Frost items. Yes, it is my mistake.

Also, I listed some Kel'Thuzad/Gul'dan Conquest items. Although they are not the best pre-raid gear for affliction warlocks, I did include them for the sake of the guide.

To answer your final question, I did have a higher level toon (same name, same server). I decided to quit WoW when I reached the level cap, 70 (this was ages ago back in BC), due to IRL and personal matters. However, I did check WoW sites, such as and Elitist Jerks, to see what happened in the WoW world when I left, and I still am an avid reader.

Although I'm currently leveling my "new" Rotciv, I have many experiences as raiding/leveling affliction warlock back in BC.
