Hunter Macros
There are plenty of places to find good macros, first and foremost I would recommend you read the how to on the Official WoW Forums for advice, the Official World of Warcraft Macro Guide and also you can check wowwiki.com for a list of macros, conditionals, and how to. Over time as we begin to learn to navigate the standard WoW interface we come to realize that it is both limited and easily customized to fit our needs. Macros are always the first step in that customizing process for the novice to learn and grow, as well as pick up a bit of coding.

One type of macro that you will never see me go into a great deal of detail about is the cast sequence macro as these are clearly about preference and speculation. Should I post a cast sequence macro it is merely as an example to my preferred play style and not a “Be all end all” uber1337 macro.

Notes


Feel free to choose your own bag slot, just remember that your backpack is bag 0 and they count right to left. And your bag slots run from top left to bottom right.

MyPet

The MyPet macro is a consolidation of several abilities that all hunters will find themselves using constantly. It combines the 4 core pet spells into one button. I do not recommend that you try to edit this macro, it is almost at the limit and can be very flaky when trying to use the dead variable for your pet status. This macro was written and tested by me, for me. There are many like it, but this is my macro.

[pet,nocombat] Dismiss Pet; [combat,nomod:alt] Mend Pet
/cast [nopet,nomod:alt] Call Pet
/cast [mod:alt,btn:1] Revive Pet
/cast [pet,btn:1] Mend Pet
/cast [pet,btn:2] Dismiss Pet

Conditions

  1. When you have no pet summoned in or out of combat you will see the Call Pet icon and be able to single left click (mouse button 1) to summon your pet.
  2. When you have an active pet out of combat it will display the Dismiss Pet icon and you can single right click (mouse button 2) to dismiss your pet, but can still dismiss in combat by right clicking.
  3. When you have an active pet in combat it will display the Mend Pet icon which you can single left click (mouse button 1) to cast Mend Pet, but can still cast mend pet by left clicking while out of combat.
  4. When you hold the alt key it will display the Revive Pet icon and allow you to cast Revive Pet in or out of combat.

Feed Pet

There are a few ways you can go about this. Both macros however will contain the two strings.

/cast feed pet
/use < Your choice of food >

This macro is simple and works well enough, but if you upgrade to a new food or swap out to a different pet that doesn’t eat the type of food you chose you will receive a message that your pet doesn’t like that type of food.

/cast feed pet
/use 0 1

This will feed your pet what ever item you have in slot number one of your backpack. Now, you will still run into the same issue should you swap out pets, but it is faster to go into your backpack and move a single item rather than edit a macro every time you need to swap out.

This is a conditional macro based on pet family that can help alleviate the need to constantly update your pet feeder whenever you have to visit the stablemaster. Thanks Deea for this macro!

Linked Spells

Linking several spells together can be quite useful especially when it comes to pet management. There are several abilities that our pets cast that you just can’t trust the AI to start and stop properly at the right time. Take these with a grain of salt and be sure to let me know if something is wrong because pet spells can often times be very flaky.

Rapid Fire will always be in my spell compliment over many other talents even though I do tend to run as a beast master these days. It is an excellent spell that can be linked with a number of attack power trinkets and now Call of the Wild. Thanks Shinke for this macro!

NOTE: Call of the Wild is a Ferocity Talent.

Trinkets

Everyone uses trinkets and linking them to a given spell can be handy. There are plenty of trinket management addons out there, my favorite being the very simple Trinket Menu.

/use Sphere of Red Dragon's Blood
/cast Bestial Wrath

You can use any trinket you like, in this case Shinke has recommended an excellent level 80 attack power trinket called Sphere of Red Dragon’s Blood.

    Needs an updateThis guide could use an update to make sure it’s current with patch 4.0. However it’s still useful as-is and I’ll be leaving it up in the hunter section. If anyone would like to adopt this guide and update it, please leave a comment.

    In this case, you use trinket slot 1 and 2, if possible. This way you don’t have to change the name of your trinket, but it will go wrong sometimes if you equip your PvP trinket in slot 1.

    Ok… well I took this under advisement and added it in, sadly, it doesn’t respect the page boundaries. Anyone know if there is a word wrap option like then you do with table cells?

    This is your main shot rotation. It basically casts Kill Shot and Kill Command when they are up, and when they aren’t up then it casts Steady Shot. It looks complicated but just Copy + Paste into a macro. On my bar I call it “ATK”

    Second one I have for you is for Rapid Fire and Call of the Wild if your pet has it in its talent build.

    A few more macrosVery nice guide, and I’d like to contribute with some of my macros:

    [b]The multi-pet feeder macro[/b]

    This macro is designed for hunters that use more than one pet (one for instances and one for solo/grinding for example). It enables to feed both your pets even if they use different type of food while taking up just one action bar slot.

    This translates into: “If my active pet is a Gorilla, feed him the Sweet Potato Bread. If my active pet is a Cat, feed her Poached Emperor Salmon.” Replace the food name with the food you use for your pets. If you have more than 2 pets you can add them all to the macro, just be sure to use the exact family name.

    [b]The no-overhealing Mend Pet macro[/b]

    Just as the title suggests, this macro will prevent Mend Pet overhealing by not allowing you to cast it more than once every 14 or 15 seconds (as much as the Mend Pet effect lasts for). This is a tremendous help to mana conservation, which is becoming more and more of a problem for us nowadays.

    14 is the number of seconds this macro will prevent you from casting Mend Pet and can be replaced with 15 or 13 as you prefer. This macro will appear as a Mend Pet icon that, once clicked, will just display the red “?” and will not cast Mend Pet for the next 14 seconds if you try to click it again.

    [b]The lazy Misdirect macro[/b]

    Yes, a Misdirection macro.

    [/code]

    This macro will Misdirect on your [url=http://www.wowwiki.com/Focus_target]focus[/url] if you have a focus set (usually the tank). If your focus is not set, it will cast Misdirection on your pet if it is active. If your pet isn’t active and you don’t have a focus, it will do nothing.

    And wanted to end with a suggestion for all the hunters out there that have 253674376523674859 pet abilities but just 4 pet action buttons. This can easily be done with macros for each of your pet’s spells. Just make a macro named “pet spell name” and:

    That’s all there is to it. When you click the button, your pet casts the spell. Easy as that. Another suggestion, if you’re using an action bar modifier addon like Bartender4 or Dominos, you can put all your pet spells/macros on one bar and place it right next to your normal pet bar. This gives you much better control over your pet and it’s abilities, at least until Blizzard decides to do something about the current pet action bar. /sigh

    The main problem withThe main problem with hunters are all the Aspects and Tracking. I actually use mods to help alleviate that and do a slew of other macros. I’ll probably start a general macros thread as well to keep things clean.

    I should start doing macroes for my hunter.I should start doing macroes for my hunter. Only level 65 though but my biggest problem is all the pet skills. Heart of the Phoenix is one skill I love but don’t want to waste a pet slot for. Should macro up my normal skills so I can afford to put pet macroes on my action bars.
